Here's to the Children!
I love to travel to new cities and meet new people. A few weeks ago I had the chance to visit in Memphis the St Jude Children's Research Hospital and it changed my life!
I was invited by Lancôme who is promoting on Oct 25th #GenefiqueDay and will donate $7US of the sale of each bottle of anti-aging serum to the children who are being treated at the hospital.
Along with editors and bloggers of important publications we toured the beautiful hospital, the Target House where families live while their kids receive medical attention and prepared ourselves for a special morning dedicated to help teenager patients to get a makeover, and enjoy the fabulous skincare and makeup products Lancôme has to offer.
In the hospital I learned that the daily cost to keep it running is one million dollars! It is well known that the lucky patients and families do not pay a single dime for their treatment or lodging during their stay and therefore it is vital that we all help and donate with any amount that we can. It was Danny Thomas who created this institution that breathes and lives in a positive and energetic way.
I also discovered with pride that the Hispanic community, its corporations and individuals is one of the main contributors to the hospital and celebrity ambassadors such as Sofia Vergara and Luis Fonsi spread the message of love and support for this cause that is famous and admired all over the world.
It was impossible not to be moved by parents and patient's stories. On the hospital walls beautiful stories of the admirable fight to beat the disease are displayed. One for each letter of the alphabet! Sadness is soon replaced by a desire to help and join the efforts to support this hospital, a world leader in research and new treatment alternatives to beat cancer.
We had a lovely tour, and at the end of the day a delicious dinner sharing stories and learning more about the hospital and its efforts. We had to be ready for our big makeover event in the morning and recharge with positive energy to devote to the task.
Morning came and after having breakfast we all went to the Hospital and met at the Pavillion where Lancôme's fabulous makeup artist Mickey Williams would lead the makeovers.
We each had to take care of one patient, make them feel happy and excited about their makeover, listen to their questions and talk about makeup and trends that they wanted to try. Soon enough we were all chatting away and talking about beauty, smiles and big expectations!
I had the honor to meet a beautiful angel that day. I saw her sitting and waiting with a lovely smile and when I approached her we soon began to chat about nails, liquid eyeliners and looks for her coming prom. Her name is Taylor, a real southern beauty with porcelain skin and olive green eyes. She also told me about her treatment for Leukemia and how she had battled and beat the disease.
She was ready for her graduation and had in mind becoming a nurse to help others heal in the same way that the caring staff at St Jude had helped her during her two years of treatment.
Her story filled me with joy and I was moved by her strength and maturity! I took care of her beauty concerns and while Mickey was doing her makeup I drew up a face chart with all the products she needed to try her look at home.
She wanted to learn to use the new liquid eyeliners in bright colors and pearl eye shadow, a little blush to highlight her cheeks and a soft pink lip-gloss.
Her face as she looked at the mirror after the makeover was worth a million words! And now I carry her example and her smile in my heart every day.
Taylor and all the girls that we taken care of with love and devotion by my friends and Mickey left the room feeling happy and beautiful.
Once more the power of beauty and love proved to be life changing not just for the girls but for all of us who had the privilege of working with them.
Let's share our blessings! Thank you Lancôme and thank you St Jude for a special visit.
